I think this question has a lot to be answered, but I will highlight a few points which I have faced and experienced:

- Good and Strong Personality is a major tool! You must be able to control your people; not the opposite.

- Be honest! Don't try to be clever and inform you staff all issues at work to open their eyes and be on the same board.

- Be supportive. Help you staff and their official and personal problems. Don't let them consume their time in their personal issues because there is no support for them.

- Be knowledgeable. Try to have a look on all related areas within your work in order to be ready for any sudden question. For example, if you are a Project Manager for Construction Work, have a look on the contracts management, construction management, and cost management and so on.

 - Be a Manager and a Leader. Don’t act as one of them. Be a manager to control, and be a leader to motivate.

- Teach people that Project Management is not something theoretical; it is a complete science!

There are a lot, but I hope this covers your question.

1. Plan well.

2. Execute as planned.

3. Monitor and Measure your progress.

4. Change your action plan as required by the control activities.

5. Work as a Team.

6. Use Tools wherever required.

7. Communicate well with both internal and external Stakeholders.  I see this as a big issue across projects and organizations.

8. Automate redundant activites where possible.

9. Mature your activity by understanding best practices from other teams and from the Industry.

10. Have a process that is transparent and clear and ensure everybody is aware of that practice.

11. Move from People Dependent to a Process Dependent environment.

12. Motivate your team members to achieve the project goals.
