Gland is a device to hold the cable end which is connected to the equipment for providing mechanical strength.

The gland it's a material that used to hold the end of the cable to provide it from any mechanical strength, to protect the cable from any scratch from the sharp edge of the panel, also you need a shroud to connect it with the gland to protect the panel from the dust etc.

Cable gland is used to hold the cable in cable termination box so that weight of cable transfer to cable termination box and cable do not hang on cable termination. In addition, cable gland also act as sealing of environment inside termination box and outer environment to protect ingress of gas, water, moisture etc.

 

In case of armoured cable, cable gland also provides electrical connection of cable armour to ground through cable termination box grounding.
