Learning and research are simultaneous as they go side by side. So much so that if a kid is learning alphabets, he is also exploring the ways to learn them. The same is true as we go at higher levels.

Even non- academics also practice research. For instance, if an illiterate lady goes to buy potatoes, she try to investigate the market; varieties and prices of potatoes, to get a better deal.

I think that's the essence of research; gaining knowledge. It definitely teachs the researcher skills but also the reason why it is done is usually to create insights about a topic.
