How do you define Base Design & Detail Design?

As per my knowledge, Base Design is the design process which will be at the starting phase of the project like Plot plan, Route survey in highway / overhead transmission project, Geotechnical survey & Soil investigation, Wind analysis for tall structures, Project Feasability Study.

Based on the approval and the details of base design, detailed design can be prepared like General arrangement drawings of individual structures / buildings, reinforcement design & detailing of individual beam,column,foundation,slab etc.,

Base Design = Concept, witout detalization, only main shape. Not many drawings (50-500 pcs.) In Russia it called Project Documentation.

Detail Design = presented each detail. A lot of drawings (more than500 for one project) In Russia it is Working Documentation.

Base Design : schematic diagrams, Electrical room locations, general concepts and design criteria 

Detailed Design : single line diagrams with all details, complete drawing package for all different systems, all calculations required based on design criteria, complete spec's and BOQ based on design drawings and priced based on market level. 

Base design = predecessor to Detailed design, i.e. the thinking,planning,conceptual proposals and ideas in past and the complexity in future to be found in details.

Base design is the frame of a car while detail design is the car itself.

There has to be a base to make your detailed frame otherwise the latter wont be possible.
