Their are many parameters on which Skills in Retail Management can be judge. In my opinion understanding your Consumer Behaviour is most important followed by merchandise availaibility and visibility. 

Management of employees is as in every team environment a fundamental skill in delivering KPIs.
The competitors may have the same or very similar products in the right locations but its the employees -only when managed by the correct people- who can make the difference

For me, people skill is the most important skill needed in retail management because we are dealing with different types of personality starting from our customers to our colleagues and to the stakeholders.
You need to balance everything to meet their expectations.
