What the interviewer is going to assess through the question "What is your greatest weakness"?

It's more about 'how' you answer this question rather than 'what' you answer.  Interviewers want to get an idea of how you respond to a question that puts you on the spot.  Taking a light hearted attitude and maybe a touch of humour might just get you the job.

To access how much you are brave to admit your faults.

How you can evaluate yourself ? and if you know well your weakness ?

They need to know, if you will admit or not n and if you have real weakness point bothering you and you will use it as a weapon against yourself 

They want to know, how you position yourself?

What you think about yourself? 

How you portrait yourself?

How you handle difficult situations?

How much you are  sincere yourself?

This question is asked to assess self awareness,to find out  if you really know what are your weaknesses or didn't find out yet. Also how do you handle this weakness point and why?the technique you use to overcome this weakness is an indicator to your way in analyzing and facing problems 

When being asked this question in an interview just be frank, real and show the way you overcome this weakness professionally.

This question determines whether you are the right candidate for the job, or not.

 

The ‘greatest weakness’ question is a  behavior-based interview question – after testing candidates’ skills and how competent they are for a particular job, employers tend to go slightly “personal” with prospective employees to determine how well they would work together.

It's personality and behavior based question. The interviewer wants to know how he is going to respond to a stressful situation or how he handle tough questions or how much he knows about himself. Do not answer I don't have any weakness because you are not an angel.  

In my own point view,asking about your weakness rather than what are your strength is to determine what area you are suitable to put up with and Incase you are hired they will know on what aspect you need an improvement.All that has been written in your CV are your strength.
