Is it really necessary to get certified in IT certifications while you already know all the information required to work your way up in the IT world?

In my view of selection, I will hire you if you know everything without certificate, 

For Example: Bill Gates is at the top of our list of extremely rich people without a college degree.

You may know all the information required..., but the certificates still the only way to prove it.Sadly, the certificates are more and more expensive and if you want to reach any high level job, you must have some certificates. Cheers.
