But it depends on the persons compentence and traits. Most of the world's big organisations are founded by people who had no experience (Apple, Microsoft, GE etc.,). But what made them to achieve big was their personal traits and knowledge about the particular business. They might have learned it from books, other personalites, own introspection, self-learning, or simply by observing.
Hence the industry experience will matter only upto 50% of the candidates competence. The rest is based on all his personal strengths and endeavours.
To be honest, I had no experience when I entered management, not even a business degree. But my CEO saw something in me and gave me a chance. That's it. I took his business to the next level after just six months. I learned things by observing what others are doing!
To summarize it all, it is not always any one factor that leads to success. Both are important factors to deliver fruitful results, qualification helps you in opening new horizons, your thought process etc. However in practical life we see a lot of intellectuals who are not qualified but they achieve much more than someone who is more qualified. So it is not wrong to say, yes experience and in depth knowledge of basics to do anything can lead to good results but yes if you add good qualification as well then you will come up with results that are more shining.
