A 'Brainstorming' Question indeed! Bundle of thanks My Dear Hafsa for initiating a constructive discussion.

The difference between Customer Service in the Western Countries and Arab Countries can be categorized as under:

  1. Gender Discrimination:  In Arab countries, mostly the Males are preferred for all key posts as compared to Women irrespective of talent which the Latter posses. While in Western countries, both Male and Female enjoy Equal Rights at all levels and there is no gender discrimination at all; the one who is more talented/proficient, is bestowed upon the job.
  2. Service Fairness Difference:  In West, Customer Service is FAIR/EQUAL FOR ALL irrespective of the customer/client’s Social status. On the other hand, in Arab Countries, the social status of the customer can turn the tables i.e. a well-to-do customer is more benefited than a poor dude.
  3. Technology Difference:  The West definitely enjoys more developed technology tools with regards to customer service, e.g. Social Media Marketing is par excellence in west; they enjoy well interconnected electronic communication system, etc. No-doubt, the Arab countries have made significant progress in Customer Service field but, HONESTLY, they still lack far behind than the West.
  4. Salary Difference:  There is a vast difference between the income of the Western and the Arab countries' CSRs; the Western CSRs obviously earn more than those living in the Arab countries.

Unfortunately, the service in the West, put on top of the senior officials who venerate the work ethic and the country and not just the salary and individual interest

Besides the very developed equipment that runs on customer service.

Unlike the Arab countries : I don't generalize, but it's the truth

I hate to say this, but Western countries train their customer service representatives all of the time. They are constantly being monitored, recorded, and pulled aside if they do something incorrectly. The quality of service depends on them, and if they aren't doing their job right, then they are replaced with someone who can do it better...more effectively and more efficiently. Customer service is a time-based industry in the Western world. How many customers can you help in a certain time period and can you do it with top quality service?

In Arab countries, there is a slack in customer service quality. Nobody is monitoring to ensure that it's being provided to the utmost quality. Quality assurance applies to customer service, too, but no one bothers to see the importance of it in the Arab world. I have been struggling for years to get them to understand this, but it falls on deaf ears. Encouraging customer service training is a MUST. It has to be done or it won't get any better.

Unlike past, present world is highly interconnected by  electronic communication system, there is not much difference among countries as most of the present people are e-educated. Ofcourse the difference may be purchasing power as countries vary in the income of their citizens. Western countries have the advantage of open countries unlike arab countries where there may be still some restrictions.

Matured in Western Countries. Arab Countires are passing through sea change towards to Maturity.

Aggression was the barrier that is getting matured by the growth of educated youngsters in the region. Days are not far away for self contained / sustained Customer Service in the region.

Customer service in Western countries (open countries) are very satisfactory and without prejudice or a selective type of service given to both genders – males and females.

In Arab countries, the service is something like a selective type where normally, all services can be given directly to males and with so much wariness when given to females.

The person giving the service though has something to contribute significantly when he or she is well aware of the social environment, what things to do and often not at the place of service being provided.

This is very interesting questions and everybody tried to see the issues in different angles- which is definitely a good approach. Let me put my views accordingly

Presence of better democratic governance, people’s right to information and technological development in the west, the customers are more aware. As a result customers’ expectation is high and accordingly the customers’ service has developed to a great extent. Moreover, less population and limited demand has prompted the sellers to be more active towards providing better services to the customers so they can expect repeat orders.

In the Arab World, the culture is more or less paternalistic, democratic governance is in developing stage and peoples have limited right to information. As result, the customers’ expectation is not so high. Consequently, the customers’ service has not developed significantly. However, customer service is quite good in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Lebanon and Qatar- because of rapid change in social structure, technological developmwent and increased demand due to rapid urbanization.
