- Consolidate equipment at1 or max.2 depots & negotiate economies of scale.

- Implement FIFO based on ageing especially if storage charges are on a sliding scale basis.

- If equipment is leased, consider off-hire at shortage locations especially if handling charges would be lower than resultant storage charges that would accrue.

it must be First In First out to avoid any overstaying of the container to prevent extra charges .

I was responsible for starting up the Depot in a small container terminal. For reducing costs I placed the Depot closer to the cleaning and repairing areas and assigned an area that didn’t interrupt the import/export traffic flow, taking that measures I minimized movements. After studying the different requirements in our historical records, the best solution was assigning zones for every line as quality standards were different. I think every case is different so there is no “magical” solution.

Sounds professional Mr.Anees , adding to what you have mentioned above to choose the depots location close to the transit port to reduce the trucking cost in case of loading empties . moreover , usually external depots offer a better and faster service for contractors so in this case you can add extra charges on the lift-on movement and benefit from this charges.
