With more than 17 years of ESL teaching under my belt, many of those years educating those wonderful young minds, I would like to say that the answer really relies on your own skill-set.
Through the years, I've tried to encourage students to develop a love for reading and writing, using their own interests/hobbies as a starting point and gradually widening their reading appetites to include levelled and prescribed reading. I honestly believe that students that love reading, hardly need a teacher...

The key with young learners is to use activities and games that promote the use of English in listening and speaking. Set up teams, teach /demo/present, have students compete to answer questions, giving points to teams.
Basically, you want them to forget they are in a boring English class and trick them into having fun. This way their minds are engaged completely. Games should be related to material taught, and review previous material at the same time.
Training?
Well if you are new and in a foreign province, adopt and adapt some of their classroom culture, school culture, then community culture. Afterwards, complete your lesson plan. Include one area of local interest, with only one or two target learning skill to fulfill. Then in class, do ten-minute plans. Start with a ten-minute Direct Grammar Method motivation, then do or have ten-fifteen minute games for Play Method, then get back to Direct Grammar for the bulk of the learning experience, then end with evaluations, still with Direct Grammar Method in use.
Loads and loads of activities and themed roleplays. Also, depending on the level of the students I'd set a rule that the students should abstain from using any other language but English COMPLETELY (newer students wouldn't be very able to apply such rule as their library of vocab is very limited.)
While teaching ESL to young learners, follow these strategies.
1] Relate your lesson to the real world. Talk about the games they play, the food they eat, the culture they follow. This help you to grab the interest of the learners.
2] Use pictures instead of words to present a concept. For instance, when you talk about a grocer, show them a picture where the grocer is selling fruits and vegetables.
3] Don't vary your vocabulary often. For example, you are using the word 'sell', don't change it by purchase. Let the word 'sell' gets inculcated into their minds.
4] Encourage them to speak them English, even if it is wrong. We can correct them later on. Speaking English builds up confidence among the learners.
5] Tell them the legendary stories which they already know in their mother tongue. This will help them to guess the meanings of English words.
Teaching students who have a limited understanding of the English language can be a daunting task. Since ESL students speak a different language at home, some of them do not know the meanings of simple English words and phrases, and it can be difficult for teachers to communicate with them. Nevertheless, teachers can exercise more patience and try to find the right ways to help to their students become more proficient in the language. Here are a number of effective strategies for teaching ESL.
Understand the Individual Needs of Students
In order to help every student improve, teachers have to understand every individual student's level of language proficiency and educational history. The best way to make lessons comprehensible to all students is to replace difficult texts with simpler terms.
2. Make Sure that Students Know What is Going On in Class
Some ESL students do not have sufficient knowledge of the English language to understand the instructions that are provided by their teachers.
3. Help Students Speak English More Comprehensibly
Teachers should speak clearly and repeat words that are difficult to pronounce, and they can help their students learn how individual sounds are produced by showing the right positions and movements of tongue and lips. Students should be encouraged to speak slowly, so that their pronunciation will be clearer and more accurate.
4. Encourage Students to Speak English Outside Class
To help ESL students make better progress, teachers should encourage them to converse more frequently with native English speakers. Also, they can ask their students to speak more English at home or take part in activities that require them to speak or read English.
Keep it short and simple. One of the most effective method that I use in my classes as an experienced ESL teacher.
First and foremost, you need to tailor instruction to your students' ability levels. For example, they may still be in the silent period, so you want to encourage those students to interact with the language through physical responses, pointing to pictures, following commands, etc. The questions you ask should elicit appropriate responses from your students. Some students will be asked questions that only require one-word responses, while others may require longer, more complex language.
Secondly, using pictures and visuals is extremely important. I use picture flashcards in almost every one of my ESL lessons. Students use these flashcards to make sentences. They may be asked to compare and contrast the flashcards, describe them, and explain relationships amongst them.
Lastly, repitition should be built into all of your curriculum. If you teach a specific language structure found in a read aloud, this needs to be retaught and practiced. It needs to be shown in other contexts and in isolation.
Focus how to make the topic easy for him by pointing to the main words or we called it key words and so.
Letting them know how much you care about them before offering to guide them in increasing their capacity.
