Do you need a college education to be a front-end developer?

Not necessarily, one can be good even with no college diploma 

Formal education in a college makes you more confident and polishes your skills but to acquire certain level of knowledge doesn't need a college to be joined.

Not essential you can learn front end development through online tutorials without formal college education. But its better to have formal education  if you want to be a good developer.
