I believe one challenge that most employees would face with regards to career growth or promotion options, would be to showcase or highlight their skills without appearing like a poor team player..
Also One needs to constantly upgrade one's skills to be able to plan one's career graph, along with performing consistently at work.

Contrary to another person’s answer, I never worried about other eligible candidates.
There is not anything I can do about their performance, I focus I mine.
Making sure that I am exceeding what my bosses expect from me.
I always hold myself accountable for all successes and failures in my purview.
.
I always look for opportunities for savings.
I look at my group’s business processes, reviewing, streamlining, and consolidating wherever possible.
The any ideas for change are always forwarded to my boss with thorough explanation, justification and cost savings.
Additionally, how they may be applicable across the organizations I seek out a credible mentor for guidance.
I feel their experience can keep me from making unnecessary errors in judgment.
I do not hesitate to go to when faced a roadblock and inversely I only hope this person to give me gentle nudges in directions or ideas that I may have a skill set for.
I also make it clear to my boss and mentor that I want to move up in the organization without saying that I am dissatisfied with my current position.
Promotions are made by many factors personality and we hope performance.
However how they are “really” made to us at the lower rungs of the latter can be “...clearly vague...
“, seems a Ouija board may be in play sometimes.
